EID & HOLIDAYS

I would say it’s amazing to me that such a short span of my life affected many phases of my adult life…good and bad. My childhood was rich in social and family environment. I had nine aunts from my mother side with an uncle and five ants and four uncles from my father side. I have one brother and one sister. Having a large family can have its benefits and challenges.

The best time of the year was At the Islamic Eid holiday which we have twice a year. This time of the year is where we go and visit our grandparents, aunt and uncle. This was exciting because we always received gifts and sweete that we were allowed to eat all day long. We had mamool a homemade pastry, sesame cookies, fresh dates biscots and pistachio filled treats. The famous kinafeh which is cheese with vermicelli snack filled with light syrup. Most sweets were traditional Middle Eastern and Greek baklava style pastry. In other parts of the world, I have asked and looked up blogs and articles about the subject of the foods that remind them of their childhood. Some people recalled snaps (colored licorice pieces). Bazooka Joe bubble gum, dots (tiny candy dots on a long sheet of paper), pixy stix (sour powdered candy in a straw), and and let not forget Mary Janes (peanut butter flavor). Slowly but surly similar manufactured snakes replaced these homemade pastry due to probably saving time and effort especially the time before the Eid is a time to buy new clothes, cleaning the house to the maximum, so its a wounder who have time to prepair pastry.
